Anna Hovet Fall/Winter 2011 Shoot

Just did a shoot with amazing designer Anna Hovet (http://www.annahovet.com) over the weekend, and it went really well! We had a wonderful crew as well! Carol Wood was the hair stylist/makeup artist (http://www.cmwcollection.com), we had the lovely Nikki Kim for our model, and Sarah who is Anna's assistant (she took most of these awesome behind the scenes shots, thanks!).

For the campaign part of the shoot, we started at Millennium Park Ice Rink and had Nikki skate a few times around the rink, then we proceeded to wander around downtown to various locations, including the metra, Hilton Palmer House, and Ada's Cafe. It was a long, but very productive day. We got some amazing shots, and Anna's designs were AMAZING as usual. I love her work! At the end of the day we came back to my studio in the west loop to shoot the product shots. What a great day! Look for the finished images after Anna's March 26th runway show.

Deleay Lashay Jewelry

Another company that I shot with recently is Deleay Lashay (http://www.deleaylashay.com)
Marissa, the designer, makes beautiful and fresh jewelry for all sorts of women. From party wear to office acceptable. These pieces are definitely not for the weak of heart. Please take a moment to check out her website.

The model is Gabrielle Kniery, you might recognize her from Season 14 on America's Next Top Model on CW.

Happy Monday everyone! After several cups of coffee I am ready to get to work!

Last week was very productive, and I had the opportunity to shoot for some great companies.

Simple Beauty Images

I recently did a shoot with the lovely Kai Robertson represented by Agency Galatea and Grossman & Jack and these are a few of the images.

These shots were created with African-American Hair Care Ads in mind.

Kai is amazing and she just glows in front of the camera.

Carol Wood (http://www.cmwcollection.com) did hair/makeup and she did a wonderful job as well! She has taught me alot about hair/makeup in the last few years that I've been working with her. Overall I feel that it just makes me a better photographer if I am more aware of all sides of this business, and I'm a sponge! I love to learn about it all.

Jewelry Concept Shots

Was doing a little experimentation with some of my jewelry and props. I will probably do some more today as well... I really love my 105mm 2.8 lens, it is also a micro lens and the quality I get out of that thing is gorgeous. I'm in love with the bokeh.

Also discovered there was a benefit to all those years of walking around looking at the ground collecting rocks, or sifting through the sand at the beach looking for tiny shells, sea glass or drift wood (my siblings and friends can attest to this), since now I have alot to work with. I am a collector of things at heart and I still have some of the collections that I had as a child. My grandfather used to bring me rocks from foreign countries with a little hand written label taped on from where it came from. I really should find those.

It was a long, but great day of shooting. We shot at the Chicago Cultural Center, and at a penthouse suite dowtown. She has some wonderful designs! And the model was great!
Her F/W 2010 collection will be presented for the first time on March 26th.

No seriously I do, and it is going to be the best year ever. I have some GREAT shoots coming up with amazing designers and companies. It just goes to show ya that if you stick to what you love and work hard at improving ALL the time, you can make great things happen.
Last year, I had national exposure on ANTM, my photo was on the front page of the Chicago Tribune, I worked with countless amazing clothing and jewelry designers, and created some amazing fashion editorials, one of which made the cover of a great fashion mag! Chicago knows my name, and I have had some great opportunities. I consider myself very lucky each and everyday that I have made my dream happen (so far so good anyways, lol I won't get a big head I promise). I'm always striving to make my best work better, cause it's never good enough.

WOW so much to talk about

Well, I have neglected this blog for long enough! I am back to blogging.

There is way to much that has happened over the summer to even begin to talk about! Some very exciting things have happened for R. Hanel Photography in the last few months. My new studio in the west loop (Halsted and Randolph) is incredible! I've been shooting up a storm here, and it's been great! I love the area and there is so much to use in my work.

Ive been shooting for several local Chicago Fashion Designers (Michelle Wu, Anna Hovet, Audey, Verdessence, ZN Creative, just to name a few), many local businesses (Ora Dental Studio, Tailored Dog, Hard Rock Hotel, and more!) and also some very exciting magazines! Check out the cover of Kouture's Fall issue!! R. Hanel Photography was even on the front page of the Tribune this year for the Fashion Week Feature issue. I was even featured on America's Next Top Model this year!!!

Wow, February was a busy month. Now on to March and it's almost half way through by the time I even realize it. I am soaking up the sunshine today, well, as much as I can from my open window as I am stuck inside retouching. I did get out for a run with the puppy today though, and it was lovely. I am really glad that summer is so close! I CANNOT wait to get out and start shooting at some of the locations I've scouted over the winter.

I recently did some work with a local fashion designer named Anna Hovet. We shot about 20 pieces for her Fall 2009 line. It went great, and all involved were really talented and fun to work with. I can't wait to show off the new hoodie dress she is making me. I'll post more photos soon. but here is a sneak peak-

Here is a girl who had only done 1 shoot prior to working with me. She is signed with BMG and UR SuperModels. She was a bit nervous at first, but she seemed to warm up to the camera very quickly. I love the shots we came up with and I would encourage all of you to go visit her page on model mayhem to say hello. I had a great time working with her!

Refresher

There is nothing like a good old road trip to clear the mind and fill it with new ideas and ways of looking at things. I love to take a long drive by myself. I generally prefer driving to flying anywhere these days. Plus you can get some great photos along the way. Sometimes I find myself running around, stressing out trying to get everything done, when what I really need to do is take a second and think. And a 10 hour trip definitely gives you a minute to think.
Spring is just around the corner as well, and I am very ready for that. I get all excited just thinking about it. I have some great locations in mind as soon as the weather turns warm. And I am raring to go. I have been cooped up too long! Now I am ready to go with a million ideas. Just wait.

BMG sent me Katie the other week, and she was great! Her and her mom were both very sweet. I thought we got some really good shots. And I've been playing with lens flares again. I just love the sun, and I love getting it do do funny things in my camera. Also, I have really been putting some extra time in photoshop getting that unique look using different color toning, etc. And I have to say I'm really liking the results.

Portraits from college

My friend Tom Bemister has been a photographer for a very long time. He and I met in college (Columbia College Chicago) and we've been friends ever since that time, long ago, that Tom showed me the ropes in the Darkroom. We were T.A.'s and we worked together often. He was working on some portraits and asked if he could come by and photograph me. I just stumbled across these the other day on Tom's Flickr account and it made me remember just how young and nieve I was back then. It's always good to look to the past to remind you how far you have come, and how far you still need to go.

Beckett McMahan, Morgan Blaul and I all came up with the idea for this shoot and I am very happy with the results. The models all did a great job and I love the edgy, rather bazaar feeling of these images.
